Who Are We??

Mr Victor Timothy

Founder

Not an entrepreneur or a health professional, but an accountant with a teaching background, Victor Timothy came to learn of the serious maternal mortality issue through his wife Bolena, who served for many years with Susu Mamas PNG, a non-government organisation (NGO) that provides integrated primary health care across six provinces and the National Capital District.

Victor, an active, committed, and faithful Christian member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church, is renowned for demonstrating maturity and integrity in all facets of his church involvement, as well as his general and personal life. He is passionate about assisting the vulnerable and contributes meaningfully to the well-being of the wider community to ensure, “No One is Left Behind”. Victor’s values, commitment, and dedication in God’s work are expressed through his efforts to address spiritual, social, and health issues within the community.

As an extension of his personal values, Victor Timothy is a devoted altruist and philanthropist, helping initiate and launch Waniati Maternal Waiting Home in 2020 with the goal of reducing maternal and infant mortality in Papua New Guinea.

In 2020, he converted his family home into the Maternal Waiting Home to accommodate and care for underprivileged pregnant mothers from rural communities and the outer urban areas of Goroka in Eastern Highlands Province of Papua New Guinea. Once Victor and his wife made the decision to commit to this endeavour, they both resigned from their jobs and, making use of their personal savings, began investing their time, money, and effort into building Waniati, in the hopes of saving the lives of mothers and their newborn babies.

Within Papua New Guinean culture, topics related to pregnancy and birth are typically considered taboo and “women only” issues. Men, generally, are unwilling to even have discussions regarding women’s health, and keep their distance from pregnant mothers, especially during the childbirth period. Victor however, breaks this barrier, consistently challenging these types of cultural norms of PNG society. As a result of his ongoing work, in 2021, Victor was recognised as Digicel’s Men of Honour Ambassador for the Highlands region.

Victor’s amazing dedication to this cause, and to supporting not only his own wife, but the wives of the wider community, is shifting the narrative from the negative perception of men and violence, towards one based on masculine strength, service, and creating a new culture of honour as a foundation for the nation.

Victor established Waniati Maternal Waiting Home in honour of his mother, from whom he learnt his deeply held conviction of the value of the important roles women play in communities and also in building the nation.

Victor Timothy is the founder and executive director of Waniati Maternal Waiting Home.
